I grew up with 4 brothers so I know what a big deal Pine Wood Derby's are.
Well, Lane had his first derby in January.
Let me tell ya, it is more than just a big deal!
HOURS of work went into this little hunk of wood.
For crying out loud, the rule book was like 10 pages long!
My vote was to paint the rectangle block, slap some wheels on it and call it good!
After I said that the look of concern on my dads face was priceless.
You see, my dad has mastered the art of pine wood derby car making.
He has produced winners for a decade now.
Like blow the other cars out of the water.
He had every tool he owned out on 2 tables ready to get this thing made.
Lane helped design the shape and sand it a little and then was off playing.
It is all so funny to me.
I'm thinking scouting is more for the parents then the boys!
We had a stake pine wood derby this year so every ward had a designated time.
Our time slot was noon.
When we walked into the stake center our socks were blown off.
They had decorated every square inch of the cultural hall.
They probably spent more time setting up for it then a wedding reception!
There was a snack corner with popcorn and water.
A JUMBO TRON, real construction barriers with working lights. huge blow up
race cars, a fog machine, special laser lights... it was all too cool!
We sent some pictures on a group text to our families because it was
so unreal how awesome it looked. One of Casey's sisters responded back saying,
glad I wasn't in charge!
Spot on! I wouldn't want to fill whoever was in charge shoes after they get released!
I guess the achievement day girls had their own derby the night before so it was well used.
a better view of the jumbotron
To start we all stood up for the pledge of allegiance played by this guy
on his electric guitar!!!
THEN, the video went straight into this pump up song.
Yes, yes they played Rob Zombie!!!
My mom and I were screaming and dancing.
I LOVE how they were doing something different then the standard
"Mormon traditions".
Who says we cant have a little fun...and jam to some Dragula in the church building!
We joked and said all they were missing were some flag girls:)
We joked and said all they were missing were some flag girls:)
After we made some noise the guy in charge announced the boys and their car name.
Lanes car was all black so he named it Black Magic.
Rounding them all up for a little pep talk.
Casey was getting nervous.
Apparently when they were getting all checked in they noticed Lanes wheels
were farther apart then in the rule book.
Casey questioned it while making the car but couldn't find it anywhere in the guidelines so
he figured it was fine.
Well I guess they had a condensed paper with the rules and we didn't catch it.
Casey wasn't sure if he could get it fixed in time or at all for him to race.
Melt down almost ensued but by a quick prayer and miracle Casey jimmied it
and the race was on!
He did really well!
I think he placed 4th or 5th out of 10 boys.
Casey said if it weren't for the wheel fiasco he would have done much better.
I think its good for him to work his way up the ranks in years to come, hopefully!!
Each boy received a medal and an award.
Time Stopper was what his read.
We love Bro. Fisher, his cub scout master.
Such a nice, sweet man who made sure each boy felt special.
(you can't escape a pinewood derby without some crying, and thankfully
Lane didn't add to it. I was worried about that!)
Till next year!
I said to just use the same car again to save us some time and work.
You should have seen the look on my dads face again!
I was just kidding, sort of:)

It's true... Dad should win an award for the amount of winning cars he's made! The videos you sent us were hilarious. Such an awesome pine wood derby!
